Search for brow treatments in Accra and one word dominates: microblading. It has become shorthand for semi-permanent brows the way "Pampers" means nappies. But here is what the search results will not tell you: microblading is a specific technique, it is not the only one, and for many people — especially on oily or melanin-rich skin — it is no longer the best one.
We are asked about microblading almost daily, and we offer nano brows instead. That is a deliberate choice, and you deserve to understand the reasoning before you let anyone near your face with pigment.
What each technique actually is
Microblading uses a manual hand tool — a row of tiny needles arranged like a blade — to cut fine channels into the skin and deposit pigment in them. Each stroke mimics a brow hair. The result, when fresh, can be beautiful.
Nano brows create the same hair-stroke effect with a single ultra-fine needle in a digital machine — the pigment is implanted in controlled dots rather than cut channels, with far less trauma to the skin.
Same goal, very different mechanics. And the mechanics are what decide how your brows look a year later.
Why the difference matters on melanin-rich skin
Healed results, not fresh results
Every brow technique looks good in the photo taken the day it was done. The honest comparison is at six months and beyond. Microblading's cut channels tend to blur as they heal — strokes soften, spread and can merge into a smudged block, especially on oily skin, where the constant flow of sebum pushes pigment outward. Melanin-rich skin adds a second complication: cuts heal with more pigment activity, so healed strokes can shift ashy, grey or reddish rather than staying a clean brown.
Nano strokes, implanted rather than cut, hold their crispness dramatically better on both oily and melanin-rich skin. That is not marketing — it is the predictable consequence of less trauma.
The scarring question
Microblading is, mechanically, a series of small cuts — and skin that scars readily treats them as such. On keloid-prone skin (which is more common in people of African descent), repeated blading work carries a real risk of raised, thickened scar tissue in the brow, which then holds pigment unevenly forever. A single fine machine needle is simply a gentler proposition — and either way, we assess your skin and scarring history before any work begins.
Longevity and touch-ups
Because blading traumatises the skin more, each refresh compounds the damage — skin gets progressively less able to hold crisp strokes, which is why serially-microbladed brows often end up as a blurred stain that has to be corrected or removed. Nano brows typically last one to two years and take touch-ups gracefully, because each session works on skin that was never cut.
What if hair strokes are not the right look for you?
They are not always. If you love a soft, filled-in, made-up brow, ombre powder brows give a gradient of shading that retains superbly — including on very oily skin where any stroke technique will struggle. Combination brows blend crisp nano strokes at the front with powder shading through the body — for many of our clients in Accra, this is the sweet spot. The right technique is chosen at consultation from your skin type, your existing brow hair and the finish you want, not from whatever is trending.
Already had microblading that went wrong?
You are far from alone — corrections are some of our most requested permanent make-up work. Blurred, ashy, asymmetric or over-saturated brows from work done elsewhere can very often be corrected: colour-neutralised, reshaped and rebuilt, or lightened first where the old pigment is too dense. Should I follow brow trends?
Carefully. Brows outlast trends by definition — pigment placed this year is still there when the look changes. The thin brows of the 2000s taught a generation that lesson the hard way, and today's ultra-defined Instagram brow will date just as surely. Good permanent make-up is designed from your bone structure, your natural brow and your face — not from a filter. A shape that suits your face survives every trend cycle; a trend shape survives one.

Does getting your brows done hurt?
A numbing cream goes on first, and most clients describe light scratching rather than pain. The session takes around two hours, most of which is measuring and mapping your face — the needlework is the short part.
How long is healing?
Brows look darker and bolder for the first week, then soften by up to 40% as they heal over four to six weeks. The perfecting session then refines anything that healed unevenly. Plan big events accordingly.
What a proper brow appointment looks like
Wherever you go, the appointment itself tells you most of what you need to know about the studio. A proper session is roughly two hours, and the needlework is the short part. It starts with a consultation — your skin type, your healing history, any keloid tendency, medications, and what you actually want your brows to do for your face. Then the mapping: measuring and drawing the shape against your bone structure, adjusting it with you in the mirror until you approve it, and only then mixing a pigment matched to your skin's undertone — this last step is where melanin-rich skin experience quietly decides whether your brows heal brown or drift ashy.
Numbing cream goes on before any needle. Afterwards you leave with written aftercare: keep the brows dry for the first days, no picking at the flaking, no steam rooms, gym sweat or direct sun while they heal. If a studio wants to start the needle within fifteen minutes of you walking in, walk out.
The honest summary
Microblading made semi-permanent brows famous, and in the right hands, on the right skin, it can still serve. But if your skin is oily, melanin-rich, or prone to scarring — which describes most of our clients in Accra — the machine techniques give you the same natural result with better healing, better retention and less risk.
