Permanent Make-Up Before December: When to Book

Brows and lip blush need healing time and a perfecting session. Here is when to book permanent make-up in Accra so it is settled for December.

If you want fresh brows or softly tinted lips for the festive season, the real question is not whether to book. It is when. Permanent make-up looks its best several weeks after the appointment, not on the day you walk out, and most treatments need a second, perfecting visit before the result is truly finished.

Leave it until mid-December and you may spend Christmas with brows that are flaking, patchy or still settling. Book early enough and the healing happens quietly in November, while you get on with work, school runs and the usual end-of-year rush.

This guide walks through what healing actually looks like week by week, why the perfecting session matters, the booking window we suggest, and how to look after new work in the Accra heat. If you already have permanent make-up, there is a section on touch-ups too.

Why the treatment date is only half the story

Permanent make-up places pigment into the upper layers of the skin. The skin then treats that area as a small, controlled wound. It swells slightly, forms a thin protective film, sheds that film and slowly renews itself. Only once that cycle has finished can you see the true shape and colour.

That is why we never judge a result on day one, and why we ask you not to judge it then either. The colour you see straight after treatment is stronger and sharper than the colour you will live with. The finished look usually appears somewhere between four and six weeks later, and the perfecting session fine-tunes it from there.

The healing stages, week by week

Everyone heals a little differently, but the pattern is similar for most people.

Days 1 to 7: bold and a little tender

Brows look darker and more defined than you expect. The area may feel warm or slightly tight, a bit like mild sunburn. Lips are usually swollen for the first day or two and the colour can look intense. This is normal and it softens.

Days 7 to 14: flaking and the patchy phase

The surface begins to flake. Brows can look uneven, with some areas lighter than others, and lips often look pale or almost bare under the peeling skin. Many people panic at this point. Please do not pick or rub the flakes, because pulling them off early can pull pigment out with them.

Weeks 3 to 6: colour returns and settles

As the new skin matures, colour gradually comes back through. Brows soften into their healed tone and lips "bloom" into a more even, natural tint. Our earlier article on lip blush and dark lip neutralisation covers the lip side of this in more detail.

What the perfecting session is for

Around six to eight weeks after your first appointment, you come back for a perfecting session. Skin rarely holds pigment perfectly evenly the first time. A few strokes may have faded more than their neighbours, one tail might look softer, or a lip edge may need a touch more definition.

At this visit Amanda looks at how your skin has taken the colour and adjusts shape, depth and shade where needed. For nano brows, that often means refining individual hair strokes. For ombré powder brows, it is usually about building an even, soft gradient. With lip blush, it is often evening out colour across the lips.

The perfecting session is lighter than the first, but it still needs roughly a week or two to settle. That matters for your December planning.

The sensible booking window for December

Counting back from Christmas makes the timing clear. You want the perfecting session finished and settled by around the third week of December. If the perfecting visit sits six to eight weeks after the first, your first appointment should fall somewhere between late October and early November.

A first session in the first days of November, for example, puts the perfecting visit in early to mid-December, which still leaves time to heal before the celebrations begin.

If you are later than that, you have not missed your chance. A first appointment in mid-November will usually be healed and wearable by Christmas. The brows or lips simply have their perfecting visit in January instead. What we would gently steer you away from is a first session within about two weeks of a wedding, a big party or a flight home, because you would be at the flaky, patchy stage on the day that counts.

December is also the busiest time of year in Accra. Visitors arrive, diaries fill and traffic stretches every journey. Booking early gives you a better choice of appointment times as well as better healing.

Choosing a style that will still suit you in March

Festive timing should not drive the style itself. Permanent make-up lasts well beyond one season, so choose something you will be happy with on an ordinary Tuesday as well as at a party.

Nano brows create fine, hair-like strokes and suit people who want a soft, natural look. Ombré powder brows give a misted, filled-in finish, often a good choice for oilier skin where very fine strokes can blur over time. Combination brows blend the two. If you are weighing up techniques, our guide to microblading versus nano brows explains how each behaves in different skin types.

Aftercare in the sun, sweat and dust

Accra is not an easy climate for fresh pigment. Heat, humidity and strong sun all work against new colour, so aftercare deserves some planning. Amanda will give you written instructions, but these are the points people most often underestimate.

- Keep the area clean and as dry as advised for the first stretch of healing, usually around ten days. - Avoid heavy sweating, the gym, steam rooms and swimming in the pool or the sea during that time. - Stay out of direct midday sun. A wide-brimmed hat helps far more than you might think. - Carry clean tissues and gently blot, never rub, if you feel sweat near your brows in traffic. - Skip make-up on the treated area until it has healed. - Sleep on a clean pillowcase and try not to sleep face down.

For lips, be careful with very hot or very spicy food for the first few days. Once everything has healed, sun protection becomes your best friend: sunscreen over brows and a lip product with SPF help slow fading.

The harmattan usually begins towards the end of the year too. Dust is another reason to keep healing skin clean and to wash your hands before touching your face.

Touch-ups for existing permanent make-up

If you already have brows or lip colour, a PMU touch-up refreshes pigment that has softened over time. Many people come back every year or two, depending on their skin, sun exposure and skincare. Exfoliating acids and retinoids used near the area can fade pigment faster.

If your work was done elsewhere, Amanda will assess it first. When the shape has drifted or the colour has turned too warm or too cool, a simple top-up may not be the right answer. In that case PMU corrections and camouflage may be the more honest route. A touch-up heals faster than a first session, but still allow two to three weeks before a big event.

When not to book permanent make-up just yet

Permanent make-up is not right for everyone at every moment. Please wait, or speak to your doctor first, if any of these apply:

- You are pregnant or breastfeeding. - You tend to form raised or keloid scars. Our article on keloids and what makes them worse explains why we take this seriously. - You have active eczema, psoriasis, breakouts or infection on or near the area. - You get cold sores and are considering lip blush. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about prevention beforehand. - You take blood-thinning medication, have diabetes, have recently taken isotretinoin or are having cancer treatment. Never stop a medication on your own to fit an appointment. - You have had a peel, laser or injections near the area very recently. These need spacing out.

If you simply want a polished look for one evening, professional make-up artistry may suit you better than a semi-permanent decision.

Fitting it into the rest of your December plans

If you are planning other treatments before the holidays, sequence them so they do not overlap with healing brows or lips. Peels and laser near the brow area should be spaced away from new pigment. Our December skin prep plan sets out a calm order for the weeks ahead.

Permanent make-up timing questions

Can my perfecting session happen sooner than six weeks?

It is best not to rush it. Until the skin has fully renewed, the colour you see is not the final colour, so adjusting it early can mean over-correcting.

Will my brows look strange at a party in week two?

They may look slightly patchy or flaky up close. Most people would not notice, but if the event really matters, plan around that stage.

Can old brows from years ago just be gone over?

Sometimes. It depends on how much pigment remains, its colour and the shape. Amanda will tell you honestly whether a refresh, a correction or patience is the better choice.

How long will nano brows or lip blush last?

It varies with skin type, sun and skincare. Most people find colour softens gradually and book a touch-up every year or two.

Booking your consultation

Amanda has worked in aesthetics since 1989, holds the CIDESCO International Diploma and is ITEC qualified. She works with all skin tones and chooses pigment shades that heal true rather than drifting grey or orange. You can see treatment costs on our price list, and when you are ready, get in touch to book a consultation. Late October and early November are ideal, but we will always help you find a sensible plan.
